What is Prostate?

The prostate is a small gland located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It plays a vital role in male reproductive health by producing seminal fluid. However, as men age, the prostate can become enlarged or inflamed, leading to a range of symptoms.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

What Is BPH?

BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly affects men over 50 years of age. As the prostate grows, it can press against the urethra, causing urinary problems.

Common Symptoms of BPH:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Weak or interrupted urine stream
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Incomplete bladder emptying
  • Dribbling at the end of urination
Diagnosis of BPH:
  • Digital rectal exam (DRE)
  • Urine flow study
  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test
  • Ultrasound or cystoscopy (if needed)
BPH Treatment Options:

Treatment depends on symptom severity and may include:

  1. Lifestyle Modifications
  • Reducing caffeine and alcohol
  • Scheduled bathroom trips
  1. Medications
  • Alpha-blockers to relax prostate muscles
  • 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors to shrink the prostate
  1. Surgical Options
  • TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate)
  • Laser therapies
  • Prostate enucleation

We work closely with you to choose the treatment that best fits your needs and lifestyle.
